ONE Thing You Should Do to Improve Your Mental Health
Mental illnesses tend to be the focus of mental health awareness movements as one in five people are expected to experience a mental health problem or illness in any given year. It’s also important to recognize, with or without living with a mental illness, we can all take steps to improve our state of well-being.
Being mentally healthy doesn’t mean you never go through hard times or experience emotional problems. We all have to navigate the highs and lows of life, which can cause sadness, anxiety and stress.
According to HelpGuide, good mental health looks like:
- A sense of contentment.
- Enjoying life, laughing and having fun.
- Effective stress-management and bouncing back from adversity.
- A sense of meaning and purpose.
- The flexibility to learn new skills and adapt to change.
- A balance between work and play, rest and activity, etc.
- The ability to build and maintain fulfilling relationships.
- Self-confidence and high self-esteem.
Mental health isn’t about living without mental illness and living with a mental illness doesn’t mean you can’t have a great quality of life. The goal is to take care of our state of mental health so that we can all enjoy life, have a sense of purpose and can reasonably manage life’s ups and downs.
The one thing we recommend to boost your mental health is to connect with others. Although face-to-face interactions look different today, interacting with good listeners over the phone or through social networks can also help you feel connected throughout your daily routine. A good listener will listen without judging or criticizing what you choose to share.
By building new friendships or working to improve your current support network, you’re not only benefiting yourself, but them as well! Find ways to engage with people who matter to you to support your health — and theirs.
